Club History

2002

Picture
  • The club is founded by British Olympian John Holliday, operating under the name East Herts Olympic Judo Club and based at the Water Lane United Reformed Church Hall.

2010

Picture
  • The club coaching is taken over by Joe and Nicole Nunn (former students of John). The club is re-named Bishops Stortford Judokwai and moved to larger premises at Birchwood High School Gym.
  • The club grows in strength and depth to over 100 active members with fighters competing at all levels.

2014

  • The club's lead coaches, Joe and Nicole Nunn win the UK Children’s Coach of the Year Award at the Sports Coach UK, UK Coaching Awards, presented by HRH The Princess Royal on 19 November at the City Chambers in Glasgow.
  • Three Bishops Stortford Judokwai fighters are selected for the 2014/15 England Judo Talent Development Squad.

2015

  • Bishops Stortford Judokwai wins the Club of the Year award and Bishops Stortford fighter Chloe Nunn wins the Young Sports Performer of the Year award at the Active East Herts Community Sports Awards 2015 presented on 14 July at the Hertford Theatre. 
  • Bishops Stortford Judokwai wins Bronze in the Club of the Year category at the 2015 British Judo Awards, presented on 7 November at the East Midlands Conference Centre.
  • Bishops Stortford Judo fighter, Chloe Nunn, is selected to represent GB at the 2015 European Cadet Championships held from 3 to 5 July in Sofia, Bulgaria.
  • Five Bishops Stortford Judokwai fighters are selected for the 2015/16 England Judo Talent Development Squad, and one of the club's fighters was selected for the 2016 GB Judo Squad.

2016

  • Bishops Stortford Judokwai fighter Chloe Nunn and Samantha Gipp are selected to represent GB at the 2016 European Cadet Championships held from 1 to 3 July in Vantaa, Finland. Chloe wins Bronze.
  • Chloe Nunn is selected by GB for the 2016 GB Cadet Futures Camp held 19 to 28 October in Tokyo, Japan.
  • ​Chloe Nunn wins the Female Cadet of the Year award at the 2016 British Judo Awards, presented on 5 November at the East Midlands Conference Centre.
  • Bishops Stortford Judokwai fighter Lily Seabright wins the Young Sports Performer of the Year award at the 2016 Active East Herts Community Sports Awards, presented on 14 July at the Hertford Theatre.
  • Six Bishops Stortford Judokwai fighters are selected for the 2016/17 England Judo Talent Development Squad, and two of the club's fighters are selected for the 2017 GB Judo Squad.

2017

  • Bishops Stortford Judokwai wins multiple awards at the 2017 British Judo Awards, presented on 11 November at the East Midlands Conference Centre:
    • ​Gold - Sarah Jackson, Club Secretary, in the Club Volunteer of the Year category.
    • Gold - Chloe Nunn, in the Volunteer of the Year category.
    • Bronze - Rob Seabright, Club Chair, in the Club Volunteer of the Year category.
    • Bronze - Bishops Stortford Judokwai in the Performance Club of the Year category.
  • 14 Bishops Stortford Judokwai fighters are selected for the 2017/18 England Judo Talent Development Squad, and one of the club's fighters are selected for the 2018 GB Judo Squad.

2018

  • Bishops Stortford Judokwai fighter, Zachary Morrison, is selected to represent GB at the 2019 European Cadet Championships held from 27 June to 29 June in Warsaw, Poland.
  • Bishops Stortford Judokwai move into their new purpose built permanent ​dojo on 22 September at the Herts & Essex Sports Centre.
  • Bishops Stortford Judokwai fighter, Chloe Nunn, wins Gold at the Malaga Senior European Cup held on 19/20 October.
  • Bishops Stortford Judokwai Coach, Joe Nunn, completes the Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Sport Coaching Practice at Sheffield Hallam University and is presented with the BJA L4 Coaching Award at the 2019 British Judo Awards, held on 2 November at the Crowne Plaza hotel in Nottingham.
  • Bishops Stortford Judokwai wins Gold in the Community Club of the Year category at the 2019 British Judo Awards, held on 2 November at the Crowne Plaza hotel in Nottingham.
  • 17 Bishops Stortford Judokwai fighters are selected for the 2019/20 England Judo Talent Development Squad, and three of the club's fighters are selected for the 2020 GB Judo Squad.

2020

  • Bishops Stortford Judokwai Coach, Joe Nunn, completes the MSc in Advanced Sport Coaching Practice, graduating from Sheffield Hallam University and receives the BJA L5 Coaching Award ​in October 2020.
  • 17 Bishops Stortford Judokwai fighters are selected for the 2020/21 England Judo Talent Development Squad.

  • Bishops Stortford Judokwai fighter, Nicole Wood, is selected by GB for the 2022 GB Cadet Futures Camp from 16 to 22 October in Paris, France.
  • Bishops Stortford Judokwai Coach, Joe Nunn, is promoted to 6th Dan in November 2022.
  • 21 Bishops Stortford Judokwai fighters are selected for the 2022/23 England Judo Talent Development Squad, and one of the club's fighters is selected for the 2023 GB Judo Squad.
